Energize Schools: Design Thinking and Sustainability Curriculum and Support

In this session, led by the SEI Energize Schools team, explore our no-cost, hands-on, NGSS-aligned sustainability curriculum units and complete a design thinking activity from our Green Building Certificate. Staff will guide participants through the Design A Structure Exercise, which challenges participants to work as a team to design a structure that will hold a textbook using only paper and tape. Sheets of paper “cost” $1,000, and each ¼ inch of tape “costs” $100; the objective is to create the sturdiest structure for the least amount of money. This activity encourages students to think creatively about design challenges, and introduces them to issues such as cost effectiveness and material waste.

Explore integrated curriculum designed to activate the arts and math. The connection between math and each of the arts disciplines goes beyond the practical nature of computation to the core of what is truly beautiful about math and the arts. We have worked to design lessons that integrate the different artistic processes in the new CA Arts Standards to enhance and enrich the study of mathematics PK-12, showcasing how to integrate math and the arts so that they share the leading role in the lesson. Come experience a math lesson designed with the new CA Arts Standards, make connections, and leave with access to resources, ready to integrate the arts and math in your class.

Questions & Phenomena – Creating with Wonderment

What does “phenomena” even mean from an NGSS perspective? After clearing that question up, we engage in observing an image of a phenomenon. We fuel our curiosity and wonder by brainstorming questions about the phenomenon. Even if we think we know what it is, can we dig deeper; is there something about it that we do not know? What, why, and where create just some of the questions that may spontaneously arise. With pastels and paper in one hand, and an evocative image in the other, we create a visual art piece in response to our selected phenomenon and chart our questions about it. As we take a gallery walk to view each other’s images and questions, we appreciate that this is how all good science starts; by being curious and asking questions!
